Visiting Cinemas across the UK

cinema tickets

I rarely visit the cinema these days, but not so in the past. Often I would visit a cinema wherever I happened to be in the United Kingdom.

Some of my favourite cinema experiences have been ‘Back to the future’ in 1985 Camberley. ‘Batman’ 1989 in Cornwall. ‘Days or Thunder’ in 1990 and ‘Terminator 2’ in 1991 at Swansea. ‘Minority Report’ 2002 Sheffield. ‘Matrix Revolutions’ 2003 London. ‘Casino Royale’ 2006 (everyone clapped at the end) at Winchester and many more scattered across the UK.

I love massive screens such as they have at Leicester Square in London, though be warned not all Leicester Square screens are massive. I saw ‘Johnny English’ and the ‘Italian Job’ (the remake), both on small screens there. Though I appreciated seeing ‘Bourne Identity’ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’ on massive screens in London, which adds to the experience.

A favourite is the small cinema at Winchester. Small screens, but great service, comfy seat and afterwards my girlfriend and I used to stroll along surrounded by centuries of history on our way home.

For me visiting the cinema is also about the company, not just the presentation. You go along with your partner, family or friends and enjoy the occasion together. Sometimes strangers will spoil the experience though, especially at quieter venues, which is a shame. One of the main reasons I don’t visit as often. My last cinema outing was ‘Tron Legacy’, which I enjoyed.

I rarely have a desire to see the latest movies in the cinema now. For me the movie going experience has changed. These days I prefer to watch movies from the comfort of a sofa, with good company and spicy tortillas.

What is your favourite cinema experience?

  1. Yep, the movie experience has changed for me too … and apart from how crazy expensive it is, it’s also the ‘other people’ factor. It’s frustrating when other people impact on your movie enjoyment – probably the main reason why we watch most of our movies at home! 🙂

    Have a great weekend!! 🙂

  2. Cinema these days is a godsend. Unfortunately I am a weekend parent (well just Saturdays for a few hours). Trying to entertain kids is bloody expensive when it’s raining. My local Odeon has kids shows on a Sat am for just £2.50 each and I get in free. A quick trip to Sainbury’s for the refereshments as the in house goodies are a rip-off and we are all set.

My best cinema experience was many decades ago when I was fifteen. A cinema in my home town put on an Elvis day and showed four Elvis films back to back. All the local Teds were there dressed to the nines and every song was dancing in the aisles. Ah, the good old days.

  3. Hello Tracey and Adrian, cheers for stopping by and leaving comments.

Tracey – The ‘other people’ factor can be completely frustrating. I’m often not sure why many actually pay to enter the cinema. Bizarre. I hope you have a great weekend also. 🙂

Adrian – I’ve walked by and seen the titles of movies for children on a Saturday and though blimey I wish I was watching that movie! The price sounds like a good deal for you and the children. Very wise buying the refreshments elsewhere sir. Not my cuppa, but the Elvis day sounds amazing!

Thank you Tracey & Adrian again for stopping by.

    All the best

  4. Hi Andrew,
thats a fine idea that you collect your movie tix from the shows that made an impact!:)
Do you keep them in a little book or a box??
Yes, movies these days. “Normal” movies can be annoying if the crowed sucks. Me and the Mister love watching movies on our big screen with our video projector and selfmade popcorn 😀
But we love to go out to see the newest Harry Potter or XMAN or THOR!:D
A really Movie Candy is the FANTASY FILMFEST in Hamburg. Its a delight. I wrote about it in my new post
