Comic Book Review: The Flash – Dead Heat

3 Small Candles

For me a Flash comic is either a hit or miss, there often isn’t a middle ground – I either enjoy the comic or think it is so so, and move on.

I went through a period of buying too many comics, especially each time I was passing through London, and so on train journeys, almost each week at one stage I was reading a new comic book, which now looking back I shouldn’t of brought. Unfortunately this particular comic was one of them.

Now I’m going to come across as not being a ‘Flash’ fan, but I am. DC are my favourite comics firm, and the Flash is one of my favourite characters. It is just on occasion I feel the stories get a bit too deep, and dare I say it… the character’s egos too bloated…..

In this comic book the Flash (Wally West) is up against another speedster called Savitar and his followers. The Savitar character is about as interesting as his name… not much. For me the stand-out feature of this book, was the inclusion of other speedsters, such as the original Flash, Jesse Quick, Impulse etc.

I don’t want to give away spoilers, but writing this review though, I’m wondering if I enjoy reading about the Flash most when he is part of the JLA. In this book expect some back story and expect sacrifice. It turns out Savitar is after more speed, which is a problem I guess as the Flash and others are accessing the speed force, which gives you the motivation of Savitar.

This comic book as per usual is actually different comics combined. So even though the book was published in 2000, it actually is the Flash comics 108-111 and Impulse 10-11 from 1995 and 1996.

You can’t fault the artwork, but at times it dragged and wasn’t as fun as I had hoped to read. In fact the second half was far superior to the first half of the comic book. I’m not saying there is no depth to this comic book, there is plenty, in fact too much!

Being brutally honest, I wish I hadn’t brought this comic book. I’m sure though many a ‘Flash’ fan will love this comic book.
