Current events – March 2013

I rarely share my opinion online regarding current events, as I don’t wish to offend others. However this is my personal blog, and I think it is about time I starting sharing my views on both local and further afield events.

Falkland Islanders vote to stay British

I firmly believe that the Falkland Islands have the democratic right to stay British, as they have recently voted in favour of. No amount of rhetoric by those opposed to this decision should change this. The issue raised over colonialism seem hypocritical, but more likely a smoke screen.

The forthcoming selection of a new Pope

I’m not a Catholic, but I appreciate the selection of a new Pope isn’t just a historic moment, but obviously one that will impact lives around the globe, including the lives of non-Catholics. I hope the next Pope, marks a change in direction on many issues.

Paying Housing Benefit directly to Tenants (UK only)

I’ve never been on HB and no offence intended, I hope I never am. I believe people should be given responsibility to pay their landlords directly. Unfortunately it appears too many during the recent trials, can’t resist using the money for other items, some no-doubt urgent financial obligations as well.

It probably has been unwise to look at it during tough UK economic times. As I’d rather people have a roof over their head.

Scottish Independence

Firstly I feel the Scottish independence debate has come at a bad moment, as surely the economic uncertainty, must be a factor of any international business decision, looking to create jobs in Scotland? Perhaps I am wrong.

I was born in a London suburb, and I have never lived in Scotland and my view is akin to the Falkland Islands vote, if people want a vote, then okay. I think as the time draws closer, more people south of the border will say, ‘what about my opinion?’. Regardless of a whether a yes or no vote, I wish the best for the Scottish people.
