Book Review: Unseen Academicals – Sir Terry Pratchett (Discworld)

3 Small Candles

This book is a fine addition to Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. It centres around four main characters and the wizards in Ankh-Morpork. The dialogue is as witty and intelligently written as you would expect from a discworld book. The storyline funny and although you expect a happy ending, your left guessing on many plot lines until the end.

Do you need to know the four main characters names for this review? I think not, chuck in four unheard of characters, surround them with familiar discworld characters and setting, then add Terry’s skill et voila!

It all evolves around football, bringing it literally out of the gutter and establishing a league. We never get further than a display match so to speak between a team from the Unseen University and a team made up of various city folk.

Plus chuck in storylines about dwarf fashion, love, a goblin (or is he?), cooks, candle making and more…. Wait there were other storylines too….. yes it’s a discworld book it’s full of different plots and people all woven together forming one addictive read.

I especially enjoyed reading more about the wizards and their adventures. Plus their decisions helped along by the prospect of a reduced cheese trolley selection!

The storyline isn’t what I found so fascinating about this book. It was purely the people interaction, dialogue and writing talent. Sir Terry Pratchett is the only ‘fantasy’ genre author I currently read and I’ve never hated a discworld series book yet.

You don’t need to have read any other discworld series books to enjoy the latest, yet if you’ve read a few, then the familiarity with many of the characters and the discworld means your in for another treat. Perhaps this is Sir Terry Pratchett’s last discworld book? I don’t know and hope not, but what an incredibly fun series it is.

I enjoyed this book and hope you do also.
